There are two ways of storing datas: in tables, or in text. XML is a way of having both: text used as tables. I can then, search bits of text, with certain caracteristics.
Il y a deux façon de stocker des données: sous forme de tableaux, ou sous forme de text. Le XML permet d'avoir du texte qui se comporte comme un tableau. Je peux dès lors chercher des morceaux de texte selon certains critères.

Exemple

I write the notes of my classes. How to prepare the content of this note to make the best use of them, which means, how to organise them for the searching I might need. I could separate all the bits of content into different files, and make a kind of database with it, which would solve the organisation problem but would really a pain reading the continuity of the text.
Je prends les notes de mes cours. Comment préparer le contenu de ces notes pour en faire le meilleur usage, c'est à dire les organiser pour y permettre des recherches efficaces dont je pourrais avoir besoin. Je pourrais bien sûr découper complétement en petits bouts le contenu afin d'en faire une base de donnée. Cela aurait l'avantage de résoudre le problème de l'organisation, mais rendrait très lourde la lecture dans sa continuité du texte.

The XML is just a way to set a certain number of terms we are going to use to tag a text. Of course, everybody can create the set of terms he needs. The XML is just the way to use this in a way that one can check that a text is validated in the use of this set.
