Lacan pointed out that Freud didn't found one object, but two. First, there is the breast of the mother: this is the object the child can be frustrated from. But this is not the main object of the psychoanalysi action. The other object is what the mother likes. Because for the child, it is of the utmost importance to understand what organises the mother apparition and disappearances, her life. Lacan studies the differences between this two kinds of objects, and the different role they play in a person's developpment.

Lacan montre que Freud n'a pas découvert un seul objet, mais deux. Tout d'abord, il y a le sein de la mère: c'est ce dont l'enfant peut être frustré. Mais il y a un autre objet, c'est ce que la mère aime, désir, ce qui organise ses apparitions et disparitions pour l'enfant. Lacan étudie les différences entre ces deux sortes d'objets et leur rôle dans le développement de la personne.
